Clinical Applications of the Couples MIM CEs

During this workshop the presenters will examine how the Couple MIM (Marschak Interaction Method) was developed and is used with couples to assess their relationship using structured play activities. They will use video to demonstrate the use of the Couple MIM with a real client couple – including the MIM assessment and feedback to the couple. We will examine the various dimensions to consider when analyzing a Couple MIM. The presenters will also demonstrate how a Couple MIM and feedback can be used as an intervention or in conjunction with other couple therapy modalities for various kinds of couples (including high conflict couples).

Trainers
David L. Gates, Ph.D., LMFT, CSADC is an individual/marital/family therapist with 40 years of experience in the fields of family therapy, addiction, domestic violence, and mediation. Dr. Gates completed the two year postgraduate family therapy training program at the Family Institute in 1983 as well as the two year supervisor of family therapist training program in 1994. He is a licensed marital and family therapist; an Approved Supervisor and Clinical member of the American Association for Marital and Family Therapy. Robin Shannon, LCPC, NCC is a licensed clinical professional counselor and owner of Chicago Healing Connection, a private practice that specializes in couple relationships and adult attachment. Robin Shannon is trained in the Gottman Couple Method and also Perinatal Mental Health. Sandra Lindaman, MA, MSW, LCSW, LISW-CP – Sandra is a Certified Theraplay® Therapist, Supervisor and Trainer, and the Senior Training Advisor for The Theraplay® Institute. Sandra has worked at TTI since 1990 in treatment, management, training curriculum development, publication and research. She has a master’s degree in social work from Loyola University- Chicago. She also has a master’s degree in speech-language pathology from Northwestern University and worked in that field for many years.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the history of the Couple MIM and how it has been developed in couple work
- Describe the various dimensions measured through the Couple MIM
- Explain the benefits of using the Couple MIM in working with couples
- Identify the MIM activities that assess the various dimensions
- Conduct a Couple MIM assessment and debrief with couples
- Analyze a Couple MIM at a beginning level and prepare for a couple feedback session
- Demonstrate how the Couple MIM assessment results can be utilized with other couple modalities (i.e. Gottman Couple Method, etc)
- Determine how to use the Couple MIM in the context of high conflict couples (substance abuse, domestic violence)
